About Tzedek

Tzedek provides statewide support, prevention and advocacy service to survivors of sexual abuse and sexual assault survivors in the Jewish community. Our work includes:

  • Providing support and counselling to survivors of familial and institutional abuse and their families, including support to apply to the National Redress Scheme
  • Developing and delivering culturally specific education programs to the Jewish community. The program is available to organisations such as schools, synagogues, youth movements, scouts and sporting clubs and covers topics including Jewish culture and accountability, indicators of abuse, responding to a disclosure, reporting procedures and learning through case scenarios.
Who can refer?

Referrals to Tzedek can be made by:

  • Victims/Survivors

  • Family members

  • Secondary consultation with professionals and members of the Jewish community

  • Representatives of organisations seeking education programs

Our Work
Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse

Tzedek’s primary role is to promote the prevention of sexual abuse of children within the Jewish community. Tzedek aims to raise awareness and educate the Jewish and broader community on issues relating to child sexual abuse in order to prevent instances of abuse in the future.

Tzedek provides culturally specific prevention programs such as community and professional education forums, a school based protective behaviours program (under the SECASA education team), programs for board members, parents and teachers and other innovative initiatives such as Storytelling events.

Support victims/survivors

Tzedek’s also provides counselling to victims/survivors of child sexual abuse and sexual assault survivors. This service is offered within the SECASA counselling service, providing options for counselling with culturally sensitive or generalist counsellors. The counselling offered includes support with police, child protection, legal services, Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal.

The victims/survivors right to confidentiality and anonymity is emphasised and assured throughout this process.

Advocacy

Tzedek advocacy work is conducted in conjunction with SECASA. Advocacy is conducted with government, Jewish community institutions, law enforcement and other relevant agencies to promote change in the Jewish community in its response and implementation of strategies to reduce the incidence of child sexual abuse and sexual assault.

Child safety training

Tzedek/SECASA provides comprehensive education packages, promoting awareness, prevention and developing the capacity of individuals to respond to  child sexual abuse and sexual assault. 

The education programs aims:

  • Educate the community about child safety within a culturally sensitive framework
  • Promote knowledge of preventative behaviours and respectful relationships
  • Educate adults on their responsibilities to protect children
